Best Free Android Apps to Help With Your Finances

This article focuses on the very best free Android finance apps. What can finance apps do and how will they help? Basically, for a short, all-encompassing answer: all these Android apps concentrate on money and if they are used, they will help you save some cash!

The debate of whether to pay for Android apps will continue forever. That’s a decision that needs to be made by you, the individual, and whether you think the paid version is worth $X.XX to you. Will it give you that amount of enjoyment or will it save you more money than you paid for it? These are good questions to ask yourself before you jump in and pay for an Android app.

Since we’re talking about finance apps that can save you money, it would be pretty ironic if I were pushing paid apps. Sure there are some amazing Android finance apps that cost money (many of which I would heavily endorse- but that’s for another day), but if the goal of downloading them is to save money, there’s no better way than to start off with nothing invested! Here they are: some of the best free Android apps that will help you with your finances!

Quote Pro

Get the latest stock quotes and news while being able to get very detailed information on the stocks you’re interested in (or the ones you own). This helpful free Android app also allows you to create and track your portfolio(s). While this app isn’t going to blow anyone away by the dozens of additional features that you may or may not want, its core functionality works extremely well.

Tip Calculator by TradeFields

This is another Android app that simply isn’t going to go beyond what it’s good at. This works perfectly as a tip calculator for anyone who wants (or needs) one. There are literally 100s of these tip calculator apps available and this one is the best. Why? For me, it has the best UI and is really foolproof. If you can dial a phone number, you can calculate everyone’s share of the 17.5% tip for the $127.56 dinner bill!

PayPal

This is a very useful free Android app for all of the 10s of millions of PayPal users worldwide. With this app, you can do all the same things you normally do on PayPal. But now, by paying for an item as soon as it’s allowable, you can help expedite the shipping process. You never know, this may not impact you at all for dozens of transactions and then the next time, you’ll get that amazing skin cream on Friday instead of having to wait till Monday! Trust me, after you’ve had this app for a while, it’s just nice to have access to PayPal 24/7.

Currency Converter

If you’re travelling abroad and want to have some peace of mind about the money conversion, you should download a free currency app. Why download just a random currency app when you can download the best of the best- for free?!? This Android app, developed by Pocketools, can provide you an extremely simple currency calculator in a very basic user interface. However, if you desire more currency information, this app can do that too: you can view currency trends over a 5 year period, graph any currency against any other, convert any currency to another (all currencies of the world are available on this app) or do just about any other thing you can think of if it involves any of the world’s currencies.

Mileage

This isn’t what you would typically think of as a finance app, right? It’s not, but it is. Most importantly, it can help you save money if you choose to dig deep into the information it provides you. It will track your vehicle’s gas consumption in a number of different ways that can be helpful if you’re trying to cut costs and your fuel usage. This app’s UI is very sleek and the data is very easy to read and interpret. It’s eerily fun and potentially a money-saving Android app!

Finance

This generic name represents the power of the developer of this Android app. It’s Google and this app provides real-time stock quotes. The UI is very solid; like most things Google, it isn’t flashy, but gets the job done nicely. If you’re a Google Finance user and you’ve loaded up a portfolio, this app will be a “game changer” as it’s fully synchronized and gives you access to everything as if you were on your home computer.

Personal Finance by PageOnce

This is a great Android app if you have many banking/credit card accounts and crave the ability to be able to stay on top of them from one easy-to-use source. This finance app is really well built and the UI is very pleasing to the eye. This is one of those apps that just keeps going. What do I mean? Well, the more you use it, the more features you’ll find and the more ideas you’ll have to utilize it! IMO, it’s a must have.

Financisto

This is another personal finance manager app. Like the other apps of this type, there are functions galore! It allows you to add many different types of accounts (checking, credit, savings- and multiple ones of each kind) into the manager, schedule and monitor recurring payments, create a budget (short term, long term or even set up a “project” which would be great for vacations) and filter what types of information you want to view during normal viewing or when checking out one of the many reports available. Amazingly, there is much more that this free Android app is capable of!

I’m leaving out some great Android apps, right? What about the huge banks’ and insurance companies’ Android apps?

*Of course, every major bank, credit card company and insurance company out there today have created their own Android app. What do they do? Well, essentially they’re all the same: these Android apps make it easier for their customers to manage their accounts and learn the latest about the company and its offerings. What’s the best thing? There’s a tie: they’ll make your life easier and they’re all free to download!

To list all these would really be beyond pointless as they’re all very similar and are only worthwhile to download if you’re a customer of the company. However, this doesn’t mean I don’t make use of them and you shouldn’t use them! I would suggest that you download and take advantage of as many of these Android apps that make sense for you. Having an up-to-the-minute balance for your checking account may just prevent you from those dreaded, expensive overdraft fees. Not a terribly bad thing for a $0 investment!

Top 5 Android Apps of All-Time

Everyone knows that the Android Market is full of useful (and useless) apps. But sometimes the wide-range and seemingly endless list of apps can leave most wondering which ones are worth downloading. Well, there are experts here to tell you which apps you simply cannot live without. From apps to help you translate a word, to telling your friends what you’re watching. Android has a boatload of great applications that will make that smartphone purchase gratifying every time you pull the phone of your pocket. These are not in any particular order because they are diverse and all quite great. Also, Facebook, Twitter, and most of Google’s apps have been left out because we all know they are great

  1. GetGlue- This is a social app that allows you to check-in to whatever media you are currently consuming. You can share whether you are listening to music, watching TV or a movie, playing video games, or anything else. The cool thing about GetGlue is that instead of earning useless badges and such like a lot of other apps, you earn stickers. GetGlue will actually send you these high quality stickers for free via USPS. GetGlue has made many deals with entertainment providers and quite a few shows and movies have weekly stickers. GetGlue will even re-post your pictures of stuff covered in stickers to their Twitter and Facebook
  2. Google Translate – Google makes great products, we all know that (look at the Android phone in your hand). So, their translation tool being wonderful is no surprise. Whether you are in a foreign country and need to ask how to bail your friend out of jail right away or you just want to impress your lady friend at a French restaurant, this app is really great. The interface is easy to use and understand, while working extremely quickly. This app can be super handy and even fun, if you just want to put random words in to find out how they are spoken in other languages.
  3. Titanium Backup – For many Android users who may be rooted or need to transfer their information a lot, this app is indispensable. Titanium allows you to save not only the apps that you have downloaded, but also their background data. What this means is you will never lose all your levels on Angry Birds again, when transferring your device or flashing a new ROM.
  4. Foursquare – This app has recently seen a redesign that changes the entire dynamic of how this location-based social network operates. The new form of the app allows the company to collect and leverage their data more efficiently. What this means for the end user is better recommendation and social interaction between you and your other friends who use the app. The revamped app allows for tips left by other users to be displayed more prominently and there are more relevant suggestions for similar establishments.
  5. Instagram – The photo sharing giant that was purchased by Facebook is not new to many people. But, Instagram is relatively new to Android. Originally, this app was only made for iOS and it took a long time to make its way over to the little green robot. If you enjoy taking pictures on your phone and showing friends what you are eating, the beer you’re drinking, or the random thing you saw on your way home, then this app is a must have. While the same filters tend to get old after a while, Facebook seems to be in development to continue making the app more robust.

There are thousands of apps that are wonderful and deserve mention but these are the ones that no one should be missing on their Android device. Go search around the Android Market and try to find your own list of apps that no one should live without.

Best Android Apps for Families

The Good, The Bad and The Irrelevant

We see the good and the bad, and everything in-between. Sorting through the Android Marketplace of over 300,000 apps is no small task, but we’ve been steadily working towards finding the best stuff for your family, and giving you a breakdown of the cool and the drool (our version of the good & bad) on all types of apps, not just games.

All of the apps that we review have to pass a precursory inspection before we will even consider them for our review process. This means that we only review apps that have some relevance to families, aren’t malicious, and generally meet a certain level of quality.

The Best of the Best

But even though all of the apps that we review meet these initial criteria, there is still a huge difference between an acceptable app and a truly enjoyable app that surpasses our expectations.
It’s always a treat to stumble upon an app that is really well made, entertaining, engaging and has some sort of depth to the interaction that it provides. You can always tell when there has been an extra bit of effort and love built into an app, and (coming from people who use and review a bunch of different apps) it’s definitely appreciated.

These are the apps that stand apart from the others, they are some of Famigo’s favorites, and we think that your family will absolutely love them too:

Top Paid Apps

Cut the Rope – $0.99

A beautiful game with adorable characters and a gorgeous user interface. It plays off of really interesting and intricate physics puzzles. If Pixar had made a blockbuster app, this would be it. Although this app has been popular on Apple’s app store for a while, it is new to the Android Market.

Drawing Pad – $1.99

There are a lot of drawing apps out there, and a bunch that are supposedly designed especially for kids. From what we’ve seen, they’re mainly lackluster. (Meaning they look like bad rip-offs of Paint, with design queues taken from the 1980s, not that we don’t love the 80’s, but these apps aren’t even trying to be retro!) This drawing app, however, is fantastic. It’s clean, easy to use, and has a ton of choices for different colors and materials

X Construction – $1.43

We like this one so much that we keep on playing it, practically everyday, even though we’ve already reviewed it. It’s challenging, sometimes frustratingly so, but that’s what keeps us coming back to it over and over again. There’s something about being responsible for a train completing its journey that’s oddly satisfying.

Nano Panda – $0.97

There’s one word that describes this app: adorable. It’s another physics-based puzzle game, but it manages to be delightful through its game play, user interface, and excessive use of pandas. In our eyes there’s no such thing as too many pandas, so this app gets the Famigo seal of approval.

Top Free Apps

Peggle

This is a brightly colored, easy to play app that is fun for everyone. It has the capability of being multi-user, which we love. (It’s always more fun to play together!) There’s an especially nice touch built into the game, win a level and you’ll see what we’re talking about.

Angry Birds

This one really goes without saying. When an app has its own line of kid’s toys and a movie in the works, you
know there’s got to be something to it. What is that something? Probably the great graphics, cute characters, challenging game play and wide audience appeal. We’d happily pay for a version without ads, but that isn’t an option yet.

Shift Lite Puzzle Game

A really challenging puzzle game with a deceptively simple black and white look. Each level provides new (and progressively frustrating) challenges that can all be solved with four simple actions, figuring out which of the four and in what combination is the problem.

Android Apps Development Ideas – 6 Points to Keep in Mind

Android is currently the most popular OS for smart phones, with an estimated number of 300 million plus, users worldwide. For developers this opens up a large market for promoting their apps, but there is also fierce competition in this segment with around 450,000 apps on Google Play. Unless an app stands out from its competitors on the store, the chances of cashing in on this opportunity are meagre.

Here are 6 ideas for developing Android apps that will set your cash registers ringing.

1. A Unique Idea – Whether it’s a gaming or a utility app, in order to succeed on Google Play, it should be unique and indigenous. Rather than trying to emulate the success of an existing top grosser like Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja and apps like Instagram, it is better to come up with a creative new approach to entertaining the user or find a niche segment that is still unexploited. Dmastore’s Italian Cooking app for Android is a good example of an app that has tapped into a niche by providing traditional Italian recipes in Spanish to the large Spanish speaking population throughout the world.

2. Good User Interface – In a market place that is crowded with offerings, an app should have excellent design coupled with a good ‘User Interface’ in order to increase its chances of getting noticed. The design should not be complex. Some apps such as Smart AudioBook Player have seen success just by concentrating on a simple design and user friendly interface that gives customers exactly what they need.

3. Rich features – Since there already are a large number of apps on Google Play, a new app needs not only to be unique but also feature-rich in order to witness a large number of downloads. In a market which already had several well-known sports related apps, Apppli’s Cricket World Cup 2011 app was successful because of the multiple features that it offered users. Besides live updates and the latest news about the Cricket World Cup, the app provided users with a range of options such as ball-by-ball commentary, listing of match fixtures and results, which other sports news apps lacked.

4. Continuity – As unique or feature-rich an app might be, there will come a time when the user gets bored with it and wants to try something new. In this scenario, it’s a good development strategy to look at the long term and offer content with continuous updates. Many apps, including Angry Birds, have used this technique by offering a free app as well as a continuous stream of new versions for which the user has to pay.

5. Be Social – With social networking becoming almost a way of life, having an Android app development idea that can benefit from the use of social networks such as Facebook or Twitter can help in increasing the reach of the app while satisfying a customer need. Instagram and Viddy are two apps that have leveraged the use of social networks for sharing photos and videos, which has resulted in a large number of downloads.

6. Customize for Android – Even though iPhones are considered to have a superior user interface, Android presents flexibility by offering features such as alternate keyboard formats and automation. When developing an Android app, rather than just adapting it for the android system, looking at how to incorporate some of its cool features into your app can result in success on Google Play.

You can develop your Android app with either one of these ideas or by using a combination of them. While trying to come up with a unique idea for an Android app, keep in mind that the user also has to see a need for it. For instance, having an app that does trigonometric functions for students may not help if they aren’t allowed to use mobile phones in the classroom. Similarly, an app that merely replicates a popular social app by offering better features may not work.
By keeping the consumer in mind while using these guidelines you could see your app sales soaring on Google Play.

Does Your Business Really Need to Get On The iPhone and Android App Bandwagon?

Smart phones now account for 27% of the mobile phone market led by nearly 50 million iPhone or Android purchases in the last quarter of 2010. Those seemingly smart consumers want to be able to communicate, buy and enjoy, whatever they want, whenever they want. As a result, more than 400,000 mobile applications or apps have been developed in the last three years.

Does your business need a mobile app?

The most used apps are for games, news, sports and weather, social networking and music. But there are a number of successful business apps too.

The Domino’s Pizza app generated more than $2 million by making it easy to order and offering the chance to win prizes.

Nike Training Club targeted women with a full-body training app featuring workouts and drills.

Amazon’s app compares prices from local retailers for over a million products sold on Amazon.com.

These and other success stories show how apps can help companies:

1. Brand-Many “first to app” companies have famous brands like Nike and Domino’s. Apple pretty much created the app space. There’s a cutting edge or coolness factor associated with having an app.

2. Satisfy-Consumers want convenience. Apps make their lives easier with valuable, timely information, increasing customer satisfaction.

3. Connect-Think in terms of the Nike Fitness app. The user has an ongoing, positive connection and the company achieves marketing touches in a non-marketing manner.

4. T.O.-No, not the football player/reality show guy. Track & Optimize. When customers use your app, you have information to track. Plus, apps help with Search Engine Marketing in that your company name is online one more time.

Before you jump on the app bandwagon, consider your options. Today’s smart phones support both regular websites and mobile versions. You might achieve your goals in a more cost effective way by creating a mobile version of your website. If you decide to move forward, here’s your app checklist:

• Identify the target market for the app and why they would use it.

• Provide fresh, updated content that adds value.

• Build an app for each mobile phone platform.

• Make sure the app isn’t just a mobile website. Otherwise, why make the investment?

• Provide a compelling reason to use the app and get the word out through multiple mediums like email, text and twitter.

Your business may or may not need a mobile app today. But you definitely need to enhance your mobile presence in the future.

The Trendsetter: Android App Inventions and the Google App Inventor!

Developers should more or less, code anything and everything they want in their real life. They can create apps to check the weather, code a game to play it and for every problem they encounter, shrug your shoulders and say: “There’s an app for that”. Indeed, with Android storming the app world there is constant need for new apps which utilize the full ‘brain power’ of the newest smartphones on the block.

As customers and businessmen are going mobile, it is difficult to bring out products and services to the mobile market but one needs to stay in touch with the market. The need is to stay in loop with the existing customers and attract the new ones with innovative ideas which can solve real world problems. Android has a vast customer base of potential clients. Most of the apps which are in demand are lifestyle apps and utilities.

While creating Android apps, one needs to keep the relevant content fresh and attractive to the critical tech-savvy audience which is quite difficult. Adopt new technologies for pleasing new consumers since the consumers always prefer the newest thing on the surface. Mobile apps continue to grow and customers scour for the next big app which can create the right impression. The apps that you provide need to be easy on the customers and they should like the ease in which it solves their problem or fulfills their need.

Android apps are important to get your company a huge brand exposure. Having an Android app in the marketplace provides chances of limitless marketing and other huge perks. One needs to consider whether the benefits that the app provides outweigh the costs of investment. Then decide on whether it should be a paid app or free! The Android app development process involves a trustworthy app developer who would have the ability to create and share innovative apps which should not mean a pricey investment.

Now here is a worthy bit of information for all non-developers. The news at Google is that it is launching a new tool which would help one create an Android app even though if one is a non-developer.

Google App Inventor is the name of this tool which claims to enable non-coders to create fully functional Android apps by completing a series of “blocks.” The App Inventor has been tested for a year in schools and now available to those who fill up their registration form.

The best part is now non-developers will be able to create Android apps and get into the market without an approval process. The increase of apps will be radical enough now since the volume would get increased, even though it is doubtful that there would be any growth in quality. There is one advantage though that the new App inventor would prompt non-developers to refine their skills by taking app development professionally. If the school-children can do it, then why can’t others do it? Google seems to thinking in appealing the non-developers too.
